In today’s fast-paced world, where age often defines social circles, fostering meaningful relationships between youth and seniors can be a rare but incredibly necessary experience. At CRISTA Senior Living, our From the Eyes of Wisdom podcast shows how intergenerational ministry can foster meaningful, lasting relationships across generations.
Several years ago, we launched this unique podcast with a simple but powerful concept: pair senior residents at Cristwood Park in Shoreline, WA, with senior students from King’s Schools for conversations centered on common interests. These episodes give our residents the opportunity to pass on their stories, share words of wisdom, and offer life experiences to spark questions and encourage students. It’s mentorship, discipleship, and friendship all rolled into one—hallmarks of a thriving intergenerational ministry.
Among the many duos we’ve featured, one pairing stands out for its inspiration and connection—Judie, a former military wife, and Sam, a student hoping to become a writer. What began as a regular podcast episode quickly became a genuine friendship. Judie and Sam kept in touch, even long after the recording finished.
“I would text Sam and tell him I’m praying for you and ask how it was going,” Judie said. “And we talked periodically. It was very sweet because he always answered within a short time—and my own grandkids don’t even do that. We really clicked.”
This is exactly what intergenerational ministry can look like: relationships that go beyond events or programs—connections that last, encourage, and shape both individuals.
Sam’s journey continued at the University of Washington, where he’s now in his second year studying psychology. But he still has a deep love for writing. After his first year, Sam returned to CRISTA Senior Living to thank the residents’ prayer group for supporting him from afar. Judie was especially thrilled to hear that Sam is now regularly attending church. That moment—bridging the gap between a college student and a retirement community—was a powerful testimony of seeing the fruit of seeds planted years prior.
“Prayers keep us connected!” she said. Her advice to Sam during their podcast conversation still rings true: “God is writing the script for you, and you’ve got to be faithful to walk that script, no matter what it is. Those are the things that really make you who you are.”
Stories like Judie and Sam remind us that Intergenerational Ministry isn’t just a trend—it’s a spiritual necessity. The Bible calls us to pass down wisdom from generation to generation. Titus 2 speaks of older men and women mentoring younger ones, encouraging growth in character and faith. Programs like From the Eyes of Wisdom live out this calling in tangible, practical ways.
When seniors and students connect, both groups benefit. The seniors feel valued and heard, and the youth gain guidance and perspective that can’t be found in textbooks or on social media. And when faith becomes the common thread, a spiritual bond deepens the relationship.
At Cristwood Park and King’s Schools, we’re committed to building these bridges through intentional Intergenerational Ministry. Whether through podcasts, prayer groups, or shared service projects, we believe everyone wins when generations come together.
