If you have considered the lifestyle you want to live in your older years of life, you have heard the benefits of living in a Senior Living Community—freedom from the responsibilities of home ownership and upkeep, accessibility to healthcare, help for the tasks of daily living, and the safety that living in a community brings. But have you considered the unexpected benefits that living in a Senior Living Community provides?

At Cristwood in Shoreline and Crista Shores in Silverdale, seniors enjoy a life with purpose and engagement. Far from being sedentary, they are on the go, pursuing interests and worthwhile activities, and engaging with people of all generations. Here are a few of the benefits living at CRISTA Senior Living provides.

Community

One of the biggest needs that seniors face is the need for community. Social interaction is essential to maintaining mental acuity, emotional well-being, and physical health.

In an article linking social isolation to health conditions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that social isolation …

  • significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death from all causes, rivaling those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity
  • is associated with nearly a 50% increased risk of dementia
  • is associated with a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke
  • is associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide

Clearly, we do better when living with others and engaging socially. The problem is that, as we age, we have less energy, decreased mobility, and fewer opportunities to see other people. That’s why living in a senior living community can be lifesaving for older adults. All you have to do is walk out your door, attend events organized by the community, and eat in the dining room to see other people and have someone to talk with. It’s all right there for you to access.

Fellowship at CRISTA Senior Living

We like to think that we have over seven residents who have passed the age of 100 and more than 27 who are in their nineties living at CRISTA Senior Living because we take such good care of them. Part of that care is providing opportunities for members of our communities to connect through Bible study, prayer groups, hymn sing-a-longs, and service opportunities. Our residents often comment on how comforting it is to know that a prayer partner is a door away from their apartment. If they are going through a tough time in life, they have many people to pray for them. And our residents frequently support each other with encouraging notes and cards.

Intergenerational Living at CRISTA Senior Living

Another advantage at CRISTA Senior Living is that our residents interact with every age from preschoolers to high schoolers to staff. These relationships bring meaning and purpose to life. School classes often come in to entertain or do an activity with them. And at our Cristwood campus, seniors participate in King’s Schools activities in a variety of ways from attending plays and musicals to helping DECA and Mock Trial teams to volunteering on the playground during recess.

Interacting with the young—or even those younger than yourself—makes life more interesting, teaches you new things, and gives you the chance to pass along wisdom and knowledge. It is rewarding to engage with children who are full of energy and excited to see you, and many of the students at King’s view our seniors as adopted grandparents.

Opportunities to Learn New Things

Living in a senior living community may give you the chance to expand your horizons and learn something new. For example, if you’ve always wanted to build something you can go into the workshop at Cristwood and access materials and tools to do so. You’ll probably also find a fellow resident there who is happy to teach you. Or, if you have a penchant for painting or artistry, you can go into the art room and use materials there while finding inspiration from the art displayed by other residents.

There are opportunities to join writing groups, poetry reads, exercise groups, choir, and go on day trips at CRISTA Senior Living. And, if you don’t find what you want, you may consider starting your own group of interest. Not only will you have many people join you in learning new things, you will have the time to do so!

Peace of Mind

There is a great benefit that comes from peace of mind, and a senior living community facilitates that in several ways. Living with peers who are in the same stage of life provides reassurance that you are not alone, and your feelings are valid. It may even give you solutions to some of the challenges you face. Or maybe it just means you have someone to laugh with about getting older.

Some of the daily concerns for seniors are eliminated in a senior community. For example, CRISTA Senior Living provides transportation to and from doctor appointments and for shopping so you don’t need to worry about how you will complete these errands. There is a dining room where you can eat with other people, so you don’t need to worry about fixing your own meal and eating alone. And, if you are concerned about home security, the entrances to CRISTA’s communities require a passcode and have a receptionist who is aware of people entering and exiting.

Perhaps one of the best ways to gain peace of mind is to choose a Life Plan Community. CRISTA Senior Living in a Christian Life Plan Community, which means you may come in at any level of care and stay, knowing your needs will be met should they increase. You can relax and not worry about moving again.
