Love Across the Ages: Celebrating Valentine’s Day in Senior Living

February 14th, 2025

Valentine’s Day is far more than just a celebration of romantic love; it’s a beautiful occasion to honor all the ways love enhances our lives. For seniors—whether single, widowed, or married—this day presents a unique opportunity to appreciate the meaningful connections we have with friends, family, caregivers, and fellow residents in senior living communities.

Residents in CRISTA Senior Living communities love to celebrate holidays, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Cristwood Park in Shoreline will host a large party for this year’s celebration, including swing, Latin, and soft rock music played by the local Mark Ellis Trio and tables set up with food and beverages. Crista Shores in Silverdale will host a concert and social where there will be fun decorations, food and beverages, love songs, and door prizes.

Start Valentine’s Day Off with Gratitude

The best way to start Valentine’s Day off well is by listing all the people in your life—past and present—who you love and have been loved by. Actively expressing gratitude for them brings joy because it reminds you that there has been, and continues to be, a lot of love in your life.

Make a list of names, and beside each one write a sentence or two about how they’ve shown love to you and/or why you love them. Get creative and draw a bouquet, writing a name on each flower petal. Make it colorful and hang it up to remember in the weeks ahead. Or sing a song, listing the people as you thank God for them.

The Free Gift of Affirmation on Valentine’s Day

Words are a free gift you can give, and they make a big impact. Make it a goal to say “Happy Valentine’s Day, You are Loved” to every person you see today! You will make their Valentine’s Day better and brighten your own.

Call your kids and grandkids and tell them you love them. If they don’t pick up the phone, leave a message. Or text them. Express gratitude to the staff throughout the Senior Living Community where you live, or to your neighbors if you are in a house of your own.

When expressing your appreciation, the more specific you are the better. Rather than saying “I like your smile,” try for something like “Your big smile brightens my day.”

The staff at the Senior Living Community where you live love it when you show appreciation for them, and this is the perfect day to express it. Your friends in the community need to hear that you love them. It makes a huge difference for people to hear these words, and you can give them a gift by simply speaking affirmatively.

Heartfelt Card-Making

One of the oldest Valentine’s Day traditions is exchanging cards filled with affection. You can buy a box of cards like the kids hand out at school and give them to the people in your life. Or you can make your own cards. Either way, a card is fun to give and receive.

Many senior living communities host card-making activities, providing residents with the perfect chance to express their love and gratitude creatively.

Celebrating a Particular Loved One on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to express their love and appreciation for the significant people in their lives, whether that’s their partner in life, a relative, or a close friend. Here are some heartfelt and creative ideas to make the day special:

  • Prepare a Special Meal: Cooking a favorite meal together can be a lovely way to bond. Don’t forget to set the mood with candles, beautiful table settings, and soft music to create a memorable dining experience.
  • Create a Memory Scrapbook: Gather photographs, mementos, and notes from your time together and create a scrapbook. This can be a beautiful way to reflect on your shared memories and the journey you’ve taken as a couple, family, or friends.
  • Enjoy a Movie Night: Choose a selection of your favorite films, grab some popcorn, and cozy up for a movie marathon. This is perfect for reminiscing over classics that hold special meaning for both of you.
  • Take a Scenic Outing: If mobility allows, consider taking a scenic walk or enjoying a picnic in a nearby park. Or take a drive through a beautiful area near where you live.
  • Attend a Local Event: Look for local Valentine’s Day events happening in your community. Whether it’s a dance, concert, or art exhibit, enjoying an outing together can be an exciting way to celebrate.
  • Gift a Thoughtful Present: Surprise your Valentine with a thoughtful gift that shows you care. It could be anything from a heartfelt book, flowers, or something that relates to their hobbies and interests.
  • Read Together: Pick a book or poetry collection and read it together. This can create a cozy atmosphere while inspiring meaningful discussions about the stories you share and the emotions they evoke.

Valentine’s Day is a time to reflect on the love in our lives—whether it’s the love between couples, the bonds of friendship, or the gratitude for those who care for us. In senior living communities, there are endless ways to celebrate and enjoy the day. Whether through card-making, movie nights, group meals, or showing love to caregivers, the possibilities are vast. By embracing all forms of love, we can make this Valentine’s Day meaningful for everyone, no matter their relationship status. So, let’s celebrate love across the ages—because love is timeless and knows no bounds.
