It’s Celebration Time at Crista Shores

August 30, 2019

It’s been my observation that communities have a life cycle, similar to people.  They are born, they grow and mature, they develop a unique identity.  That has certainly been the case for the Crista Shores community that was conceived and born 25 years ago and has grown and developed in amazing ways over the past quarter century!  Crista Shores was first conceived in the late 1980s in the minds and hearts of a group of Kitsap County residents and community leaders who wanted to have a better option for retirement living in the central Kitsap area.  Crista Shores historical photos. CRISTA Ministries was already a familiar presence in Kitsap County thanks to the camps operated at Island Lake and Miracle Ranch.  The Kitsap group reached out to CRISTA and the CRISTA Board bought into the idea with enthusiasm.  Ground was broken in 1992 and a beautiful building began rising from the shore, with four stories of apartments all looking out at the waters of Dyes Inlet and the Olympic Mountains beyond.  In keeping with the original vision, the new community was designed to offer a vibrant, purposeful retirement lifestyle for active seniors while also offering quality health care facilities for those with additional care needs.  As with any new endeavor there were some birthing pains, but those challenges helped to forge a strong sense of community.  The first residents moved in on September 6, 1994 and Crista Shores has been blessing residents, families, staff and the surrounding community ever since.

Over the past 25 years Crista Shores has been home to over 5,000 residents, each of whom has played a role in writing the story of this special community. The physical facility has been expanded and improved, including a major building envelope project in 2008 that rebuilt the decks and added glass-walled balconies to make the most of the breath-taking views.  But the heart of Crista Shores has always been the people.  Residents have shaped and sculpted the programs and activities at Crista Shores to reflect changing interests and passions.  LeadingAge Washington has twice recognized Crista Shores residents as “Senior Stars”, an honor recognizing seniors in our state who have had a significant positive impact on their communities.  On a daily basis the extended family at Crista Shores is living out the promise of Psalm 133, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in harmony.”

Congratulations, Crista Shores, on such a successful first 25 years.
